What are the pros and cons of building multiple bases?

When playing Supreme Commander, do you like building multiple bases or a few one in the game? If you're into setting up more bases, what's the derive behind using such strategy and vice versa?

Have you ever regretted why you didn't build more bases or why you built more instead of having less?

One of the advantages include better defense which is very essential. Cons are higher maintenance costs and complexity. I think you need to be a Pro in RTS games to effectively utilise a multiple base.
