Free-to-Play is a phrase which has, historically, carried some fairly negative connotations. Here at RTS HQ, we aim to highlight the best strategy games across the board, and today we’re focusing on free-to-play real-time strategy games. These titles offer a great way to dive into RTS games without the upfront cost. This can be a great way for people who are curious about real-time strategy to experience some incredible games. Each of these titles brings something unique to the table, from large-scale battles to community-driven development, all while being accessible to everyone.

RTS games can be played for a while, so you wouldn't need to get too many of them to play, one should keep your budget happy.

Since these are free, you can play them all without worrying about your budget.

A few honorable mentions:
  • Smelogs Playground is a small F2P RTS in early access. This one has a bunch of new mechanics that were a lot of fun to try out.
  • Spellforce 3 has a free-to-start version that lets you unlock on race (Humans, Elves, or Orcs) to play in online skirmishes. If you like PvP or want to play vs the AI, this is a good way to try it out.
  • Age of Empires 3 also has a limited free version that includes a couple of different game modes and a rotating list of civilizations.

I've played some of the RTS games listed in the article. They are very good ones to give a go without having to worry about spending money on buying them. As long as they not loaded with aggressive microtransactions, they are worth playing.
