Crewing one of these:

The v-150 Planet Defender (or v-150 Ion Cannon) is a planetary defence battery designed to disable blockading or invading capital ships in orbit. Used in conjunction with planetary shields its purpose was to defend planets and it could disable a Star Destroyer with a single shot. Being a stationary target they were targets of high priority for the Imperials.

There's a reason why crewing one of these is essentially suicide. First, the v-150 is a weapon of last resort. It's likely use occurs when the Empire has found a secret rebel base, like what we saw in the Battle of Hoth.

If you're crewing one of these the chances are the Empire is descending on your position with overwhelming force. They're not all that interested in taking prisoners either.

It's worth noting these are going to be targeted asap. The danger they pose to capital ships means they're going to be high on the list of targets for ground forces to hit. As the only ground-based weapon which the Alliance has access to which can damage capital ships, expect their destruction as soon as the AT-ATs get in range.

The v-150 is providing cover for the evacuation of a rebel base. It's not likely there will be time to rescue the crew of the Ion Cannon. Your evacuation is unlikely. Legend has it that the job was so dangerous that the v-150 on Hoth was crewed by men who had lost their entire families on Alderaan. They were willing to give their lives to help the Rebellion - and hurt the Empire.
