As a youth I consumed Star Wars literature like my life depended on it. I went through almost all of the EU (Expanded Universe) books. This was before Disney threw all that away and introduced new canon. I don't hate on Disney, they have brought a lot of Star Wars media out which many of us older Star Wars fans thought we would never see. You could say that they have introduced Star Wars to a new generation of fans. That said, the original EU will always have a place in my heart.

But I ask, which do you prefer? The original Expanded Universe stories - now called Legends - or the new Disney Star Wars?

Hate is a powerful force to be used with prejudice and Disney era canon is a powerful conduit. I'm pretty sure I barely exist if at all there so you can imagine my preference for Legends is strong.

But yeah, I guess Disney canon is not out of line for the modern generation and I've actually seen it turn over new fans for the old expanded content. From time to time I do find things to like. Rogue One, Andor. I'm tolerant if and as long as we see more of these. There's just enough passion for Legends material for that to be kept alive, slowly. I've toyed with the idea of a campaign mod for Jedi Academy based on the very old republic with themes from KOTOR. So the dream is alive and Disney has done better than other companies in letting you eat from both pies. Star Wars has always had the benefit of offering different things at different levels to enjoy, heck, that started with Originals vs Prequels. Compare to, I don't know, Blizzard Entertainment where you see hopeful older material and it's totally overwritten, and overtaken by newer, not necessarily better material. Far harder to find common ground.

In Star Wars you have many fragments but that means you can always find an aspect you can discuss with someone who's deep enough even if you have passionate differences with a particular form - the clone wars animated series, originals/prequels/sequels, old republic era, books from various timeframes... even if you divide on Canon (disney) vs Legends. I can't think of another setting with this sort of reach.

Also I've always been more old republic style than anything else and it's not been heavily touched by modern Lucasfilm. Their foray is easily isolated into one era while I can pursue others. I've never been terribly interested in what happens post ROTJ and the sequels helped put that to bed even more. So I find it easy to just live and let live on this subject. If you like modern canon, great...

Legends has a lot more material than Vad, which means you can simply overlook it and still enjoy everything, which is part of the reason I prefer it better. Additionally, it seems to be an extension of the OT instead of the ST. Both are good though, and it really boils down to personal prefence.

I’m heavily in the Legends camp but I have enjoyed ‘most’ of what Disney has put out. Especially when they touch on the original characters like with Luke in The Mandalorian:

Or Vader in Obi-Wan:

So ultra he doesn’t even need to take out his lightsabre.

I personally prefer the original Expanded Universe stories, now known as Legends. They hold a special place in my heart as they have provided countless hours of enjoyment. However, I appreciate the new Disney Star Wars for introducing the franchise to a new generation and expanding the universe in different ways.

Legacy of the force and knights of the old republic are two story collections from the the original expanded universal stories that made me prefer the older versions. The legacy of the force talking about the struggles within the skywalker and solo families was one that I enjoyed reading about. The focus on Jacen Solo's fall was an interesting one to read.
