You could make the argument that zombies improve everything. They certainly tip everything you know on its head. This is exactly the case with this fan-made game based on the Star Wars universe.

There isn’t a survival horror in the Star Wars canon and that’s a shame. Considering the galaxy is so vast, you would expect there to be some pretty scary situations that players could find themselves in. So, fixing that issue is this demo available on Itch.io. Star Wars: Deathtroopers essentially merges Star Wars with Dead Space.

Suddenly the galaxy’s most useless soldiers become a real threat. If you watch through the trailer on the Itch page, you’ll spot an undead Darth Vader which is particularly creepy and honestly, we dig it.

Players who have tried out the game are singing its praises. It shows there’s a lot of scope for the franchise that fans would eat up if they had the chance. Whether Disney would allow for a more mature game focusing on an even darker side of the dark side is unlikely, but at least if these fan projects manage to hold on, it gives us fans a new experience.

Even without zombies, a Dead Space-style game with creepy aliens and looming danger would fit the franchise well. A lone rogue smuggler or young Jedi having to take on lurking danger would be amazing. Imagine a Star Wars game set in a dark and eerie corner of the galaxy, far removed from the epic battles between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire. Players on a journey through a forgotten sector, filled with ancient mysteries, uncharted planets, and death lurking in the shadows.

The atmosphere of the game would be heavily inspired by the Dead Space series, with dimly lit corridors, flickering lights, and an overwhelming feeling of isolation. Players would constantly face the looming danger of unknown threats, never knowing when the next terrifying encounter might occur. The Star Wars universe offers a wide array of strange and horrifying alien species that could serve as the primary antagonists, each with their own unique abilities and weaknesses.

As for the mention of "zombie Stormtroopers," this could be a particularly chilling element of the game. Imagine encountering Stormtroopers who have been infected or altered by a mysterious force, turning them into mindless, undead creatures. The question of whether their helmets can protect them from being bitten or turned into zombies could add an element of tension and uncertainty. Players might have to strategize carefully when dealing with these enemies, deciding whether to target the helmet or find alternative ways to eliminate the threat.

Overall, a Dead Space-style Star Wars game would be an incredible addition to the franchise, offering a fresh and terrifying experience for fans who crave a darker, more suspenseful side of the galaxy far, far away.

It could certainly work nicely if done well, but just gluing in zombies is also rather tropish and can come off as rather boring. As with many things delivery is the key. If it's a good zombie experience, excellent, if it's just your usual onmnomnom shoot at slow occasionally speedy beat up rehashes of familiar characters, the novelty will wear off quickly.

Definitely room for a horror take though, Abeloth comes to mind as precedent for a final boss type.
