Globalism: A Grand Strategy Game on Modern Geopolitics

Few concepts capture the essence of the modern world as effectively as globalism. In the latter half of the 20th century, it emerged as the transformative force that truly connected people on a global scale. However, it also introduced numerous variables into the economy and geopolitics, shaping the world we know today. These variables have been the root cause of various crises and small-scale conflicts. The consequences of these challenges are often borne by third-world countries, which remain in desperate need of industrialization supported by globalism. This backdrop makes the grand strategy RTS game Globalism, developed by Igelanium Games, a uniquely compelling and thought-provoking experience for players.

Globalism from its outset might look like another generic large-scale 4x game where you will lead armies to spread your chosen nation all over the globe. And on some level, it does apply to the game but its key features help differentiate it from the crowd.  Said features are the global supply chain and the precision economy. Now to understand them you need to know one crucial thing about the game. In it, you can play as any modern nation of your choosing. Which in many players’ eyes is a plus, but when you factor in third-world countries the context changes. As many either don’t have the technology to support research or simply lack the resources needed for large-scale production. This is where the game’s point of product production and consumption not being the same applies and is the core foundation of the whole game and its name’s sake.

A normal game of Globalism follows a very simple flow of events. You start with your nation of choice, which may or may not be a leading superpower. And from there you simply expand and set up large-scale supply chains. Invest in the economy of other nations, open up diplomatic channels with them, and start-up trade by providing them with resources unique to your region. To accomplish this, you will need to build up your nation, develop your different regions, and ensure stable infrastructure. It will also entail researching new technologies such as renewable energy, ideological policies, and even AI. But do be careful with said research as it can lead to new crises such as Global Warming, Global Recessions, and even AI revolutions aided by nuclear weaponry. War is also going to be a staple in your game because as you expand you will need to secure your interests through whatever means necessary.

Grand Strategy RTS games are often challenging to define due to their diverse themes and unique settings. However, Globalism stands apart by being grounded in the modern world, free from the typical fantasy or sci-fi elements. This realistic approach benefits the game in the long run, as its systems are designed to help players better understand the complexities of the modern geopolitical landscape. Some in-game crises even serve as simulations, offering insights into how global supply chains might react under specific strains.
