Block Strategy: A Twist on RTS with a Fully Destructible World

Block Strategy has just launched on Steam following an early debut during June’s Steam Next Fest. Developed by indie studio Marc Makes Games, this PC-only title brings a refreshing mix of familiar RTS mechanics and innovative new ideas, set against the backdrop of a fully destructible world.

Block Strategy is an RTS base defence game with roguelite elements, designed for single-player experiences. The premise is simple but compelling: you are among the last surviving robots, warping through space to escape overwhelming enemy forces. With each warp, you find yourself rebuilding a new base to defend against relentless waves of robotic adversaries. The ultimate goal is to gather enough strength, resources, and fuel for your reactor to mount a counter-offensive and destroy the enemy once and for all.

A key feature of Block Strategy is its destructible environment. Every block in the game world can be manipulated, destroyed, or mined, allowing for a fluid and dynamic approach to base-building and defence. Walls can be created to funnel enemies into kill zones and caves can be mined for resources. The game encourages you to think strategically about how you interact with the terrain. The destructible environment isn’t just a gimmick or purely visual element; it plays a central role in how you defend against and engage with your foes.

In Block Strategy, base-building is more than just placing a few structures. Players must balance constructing buildings that provide units, generate resources, and power their defences with upgrading their heroes and units. Up to six hero units can be created, each with customizable abilities and roles, ranging from tanks to damage dealers to healers. These heroes are essential for surviving the waves of robotic enemies and exploring the world to discover valuable resources, hidden upgrades, and powerful bosses.

The game’s procedural generation ensures that no two playthroughs are alike. Outside of the tutorial and an endgame area, every session takes place in a unique, auto-generated world. Randomized points of interest, resource locations, and enemy bosses mean that players must adapt their strategies and explore their surroundings carefully. The combination of RTS mechanics with a roguelite structure offers a fresh, replayable experience in a genre that can sometimes feel stagnant.

Block Strategy also stands out for its uncompromising single-player focus. There are no plans to add multiplayer to the game—a decision that developer Marc Makes Games says allows for tighter control over enemy behaviour and balancing. This decision also enables Marc to focus on creating a more polished, single-player experience where every encounter is finely tuned and every enemy attack is designed to be avoided or countered by a skilled player.

The game’s story is a simple mechanism for presenting the game. Set in a future where robots built to protect humanity have long outlived their creators, you play as the last of these machines. Using newly developed technology that allows you to warp away from danger, you must rebuild and reclaim your home, fighting through waves of enemies and uncovering the mysteries of a now-robotic world. There is no narrative or campaign in Block Strategy, the story is told through the world itself, with each playthrough offering different insights and challenges that encourage exploration.

The game is only available on PC and Marc has indicated that there are no immediate plans for a console release or Steam Deck support. He’s expressed some interest in testing the game on the Steam Deck after release, but isn’t ready to make any promises. The game’s RTS mechanics, particularly its destructible environments, could potentially present challenges for adapting to non-PC platforms.

For those intrigued by the game’s fresh take on the genre, Block Strategy is available to purchase on Steam, where you can experience its innovative mechanics first-hand. From the early impressions shared by players on Reddit and other platforms, the game has already garnered attention for its polished gameplay and inventive approach.

Fans of the RTS genre who are looking for something different will find much to appreciate here. Block Strategy doesn’t recycle the same old tropes but instead introduces a blend of strategy, destructibility, and roguelite elements that feels both challenging and exciting. Whether it’s the dynamic world, the strategic depth of base defence, or the customizable heroes, this is a game that promises to offer something different in a crowded field of Command and Conquer clones.

If you’ve grown tired of the usual formulas and are looking for a game that pushes the boundaries, Block Strategy might be exactly what you need. With its full release now available, there’s no better time to dive in and explore its innovative take on the RTS genre. Head over to its Steam page to start playing and see for yourself how Block Strategy redefines the battlefield.
